It didn’t matter if you came first or last everyone was a winner
Riding 900km of off-road cycling ain’t easy, but meeting others and enjoying the great outdoors was one the most beautiful experiences one could ever wish to imagine. For 9 days more than 800 mtb enthusiasts rode the beloved country. Scenically South Africa must rank as one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Seeing large flocks of bronze mannikins, blue waxbills and red-headed finches as well as massive flocks of red billed-queleas ( in Africa queleas are regarded as pests and destroy hundreds of crops ) made the journey so much more rewarding.
Throughout the race the RFCG cycling shirt was worn with great pride and lots of participants asked questions about what we do as a group. If you wish to see some spectacular parts of South Africa visit the joBerg2c YouTube channel and have a look at some breathtaking video clips that were taken each day. If you can only look at one day look at Day 4. Day 9 is also worth viewing if you can squeeze in an extra day.
The Rare Finch Conservation Group is registered in South Africa as a non-profit organisation. Founded in 2005, it is totally dependant on donors and sponsors to carry out its conservation work on finches in the wild.
