According to a posting by Jean Claude Kyungu on the Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation website www.itfc.org the world’s only known modern day photograph of the elusive Shelley’s crimsonwing finch was taken at Mt Tshiaberimu at 2800m on the west up view of Lake Edward in a mixed forest with bamboo in the Virunga National Park ( DRC ). As per an earlier posting today the Virunga National Park ( DRC ) is now threatened with the potential of oil exploration work

It certainly is sad to think that so much good conservation work has been done on the threatened Mountain Gorilla’s and yet virtually nothing is known about the threatened Shelley’s Crimsonwing finch that inhabits the same area . The Rare Finch Conservation Group hereby makes a desperate plea to financially support its third phase of field research work in the region in order to find out more about this elusive finch . It’s a well known fact that birds often serve as keystone species and indicators to what is really happening in a particular environment . We now , more than ever, urgently need to find out why this endemic crimsonwing  finch species to the cental African region has become so rare
