Searching for the Shelley’s Crimsonwing in Uganda wouldn’t be possible without the reliable, honest and passionate help of our on-site field manager, Benson Bamatura. An avid bird enthusiast at heart, Benson helps the RFCG collect data on the finches he nets and releases on a daily basis in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It’s a thankless task, but one that Benson continues to believe in.
He reports back to the RFCG members in South Africa on the progress of our project by sending photos, finch measurements and tagging codes. Thanks to his training from the RFCG, Benson has learned to operate and write emails and take photographs on digital cameras. We look forward to the day Benson sends us an email to say that he and his team have sighted or netted the Shelley’s Crimsonwing!
The fifth edition of PLANET digimag has likened Benson’s efforts to those of Sir David Attenborough, citing them both as ‘biodiversity heroes’. You can read more about Benson’s efforts by clicking on this link: PLANET digimag 5th edition
